ARTIST STATEMENT
My interest lies in abstraction and the use of colour and texture. The conceptual underpinning of most of my work is the signifier: a suggestion; a symbol; a sign… a mark. The mark is symbolic of a language used at another time in my life, namely, shorthand. A method of rapid handwriting using simple strokes or outlines to replace letters, I enjoy being able to make marks that aren”t immediately obvious, but give my work a deeper meaning, enabling me to leave my individual message in each work.
Part of my investigation of the symbolic and language uses the ground as a counter-point to the lineal mark, manipulating the surface and employing various techniques where oil paint is applied in either transparent or opaque layers, with hard edges often softened by free brush-strokes, exploring the tension between the hard and blended edges, frequently intensified by the choice of colour.
More recent paintings reflect the influence of the environment that I am now working, with a subtle, blended, almost realistic ground, but there is always an “edge” or “line”, which can be a simple brush stroke, or paint dragged across the canvas with a palette knife, creating a certain tension, leaving those that engage with the work to … imagine.
